“Choose this day whom you shall serve.” (Joshua 24:15)
Elections and critical votes are often fraught with tension because what the majority chooses dictates the destiny of all. Election results either liberate or restrict those subject to the outcome depending on their political persuasion. Like it or not the leaders chosen and laws passed impose their will upon all. The vote of each individual is heralded as important, but realistically, a solitary ballot cast is no guarantee of being the deciding vote to agreeably shape one’s destiny.
But here’s an empowering thought. There is a guarantee of always being in the majority whenever we agree with God about our destiny. Our single vote plus God’s vote always results in a ruling majority no matter how outnumbered we may be. The odds can be stacked against us. People may be opposing us. Our own doubts and fears may be holding us back. Circumstances may be dictating otherwise. The devil himself may be threatening and harassing us. But God is all we need on our side to cast the deciding vote. God is all we need on our side to overrule everyone and everything that would oppose us.
Paul tells us “If God is for us, who can be against us?” ”For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:31, 37-39 NIV)
Being outnumbered and overpowered is nothing for someone who aligns him or herself with God. Moses and God were a majority in liberating the Israelites from Pharaoh and the Egyptians. Gideon and God were a majority in defeating the Midianites. David and God were a majority in defeating Goliath and the Philistines. Elisha and God were a majority in overcoming the Arameans. Jehoshaphat and God were a majority in defeating the Ammonites and Moabites. I could go on and on.
Our biggest enemy is often within our own skin, lurking in the neighborhood of our mind. A multitude of voices coalesce as a guerrilla army of resistance against us. The devil, lies and misbeliefs, our fears and doubts, past failures and disappointments all gang up on us to overrule the promises of God regarding our future and destiny in Him. But no matter how daunting an attack, no matter how outnumbered we may feel, we can still cast the deciding vote about our future simply by agreeing with God. Think of your ballot as the Bible, God’s word. Open the ballot and begin choosing and checking all the promises that apply. The promises will always win out and defeat the many voices to the contrary.
The power you have to cast the deciding vote regarding your well being and destiny is yours for the taking. As Joshua said to all of Israel after arriving in the promised land “Choose this day whom you shall serve.” (Joshua 24:15)
